We have a fab opportunity for you to join our Transforming Care team, helping our brilliant customer to live a fulfilling life in his own home within the local community. As our support worker, you’ll work with our customer let’s call him T, who has complex support needs, including learning disability, mental health issues, autism and communication differences, alongside ongoing physical health conditions. While this job is hugely rewarding, it really isnt always easy. Our customers can and do challenge us at times and display distressing behaviours.
The man you will be helping, has a fun, bubbly and hugely energetic personality, he loves the outdoors, taking part in lots of adventurous activities from hiking, biking to rock climbing, you’ll certainly keep fit operating at his pace! His other interests include music, singing, acting and impersonating; so, one day you might be out on a hike in the morning and taking part in a talent show in the afternoon! Don’t worry there won’t be an audition and you’ll find Simon Cowell on our job interview panel!
What T really wants, is a support worker who’ll take the time to get to know him, who is caring, a good listener, positive and encouraging. What he needs, is for you to be a keen observer and quickly to read and recognise changes in his behaviour, and based on that adapt your approach, dialling the energy levels up or down.
With the help of our Team Leaders and clinical team, you’ll help T to participate in his favourite things as well as trying new things through positive risk taking. You’ll provide consistent support when he’s finding things a bit difficult and find creative ways to help him participate in daily living activities aimed at increasing his independence.
About our team
You’ll work for Deb our Registered Manager who has worked for Home Group for 5 years. Deb has loads of experience in working with customers with both mental health and learning disabilities and has a clinical background in nursing. Deb was also an accredited psychotherapist in a previous life before joining Home Group and is perfectly placed to help you settle into your new role!
Outside of doing her job, you’ll find Deb spending quality time with her family and when we can again, she loves cooking for friends and cheering on her local football team.
Where you’ll work
You’ll work primarily with T in his own home in Swindon, as well as assisting him in the community. But there will likely be opportunities to work with our other customers in Swindon! You can use public transport to support him and we’ll pay your expenses to cover this!
T needs our support 24/7, so you’ll take your turn working on a rota basis which includes working days, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. You’ll also be asked to help cover night shift when your permanent nights colleagues are off. Finally, you could be asked to do a sleep in shift and pay you an enhancement for that.
The great news is that being flexible works both ways, as we’re asking you to be flexible for T, we’ll give you the time you need to do the things that matter to you!
You’re passionate and motivated to assist T with any aspect of his day to day living. You’ll be able to work in a person centred and strengths-based way, assisting him to enjoy the best possible quality of life. You’ll help change his life for the better by involving him and his support network) in working towards his aspirations. You’ll provide personal care in a strengths-based way to facilitate greater independence, as well as use creative solutions, and assistive technology where available, to support independence.
Ideally, you’ve worked in a similar job before, and it’s important that you’re prepared to provide personal care and have experience of helping customers to reach their full potential. In a perfect world you hold a level 2 or equivalent in Health and Social Care (or are prepared to study for this with our support), you have a great knowledge of professional boundaries, safeguarding, risk assessment and working with personalised support plans.
When you start the job, you’ll need to have a valid Enhanced Check under the Disclosure and Barring Service. The great news is that we will pay for that to be done if you don’t have a transferrable one.
In line with current Government legislation for CQC services, you must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated to work in this service, unless you are exempt. A job offer will be subject to providing evidence of this condition of employment.

Don’t worry, we won’t drop you in the deep end, we’ll develop your talent, help you learn quickly how things work here and you’ll have a fantastic induction with ongoing learning and development! You’ll be trained to support our customer’s mental and physical wellbeing and to take positive risks to enable his successful journey to have his own home and being part of his community. If required (and only as a last resort), you may need to use physical intervention and we will provide you with training and support to do this safely.
